FL2, a high-end, full-service interactive agency, worked in collaboration with Modernista!, an award-winning advertising agency based in Boston, to launch a new micro site to promote the Ken Burns documentary, The National Parks: Americas Best Idea, now airing on PBS.
The micro site is rooted heavily in what have become two of FL2s signature trademarks, intuitive organization of data and innovative transitionsin this case through the use of JavaScript.
The site allows people to contribute and share content in many ways. A large database of national parks can be browsed and sorted by state, user interests, or general user behaviors such as most popular parks or park information viewed most frequently. Each park has a profile, complete with a map, real-time weather data, and interesting park facts. A global site feature allows people to pledge their support to the National Park Foundation.
All of the imagery used on this project is leveraged from photos uploaded via Flickr, empowering the general public to frame the presentation of each and every park in the National Park System. Users are credited for their contributions, reinforcing the concept that we all have collective ownership of our national landscape.
The primary call-to-action on the site involves users tagging their favorite park spots and sharing tips and memories with the online community. These tags can be posted on social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter, enabling people to discuss their interest in the parks and to encourage others to join the community and participate. In an effort to expedite this process, FL2 integrated Facebook Connect, allowing users to quickly log in to Facebook through the site and post their comments directly to the social network.
