Chantilly, VA (PRWEB) March 5, 2009 -
Blue Ridge Networks today confirmed that users of Blue Ridge/Secure AppGuard are unaffected by the latest zero-day attacks on Adobe Reader and Microsoft Excel. These vulnerabilities allow a Trojan horse to be delivered when users open specially crafted Excel or PDF files. The Trojan can then retrieve and install additional malware on the infected system. AppGuard prevents machines from executing the harmful instructions delivered by this class of malware, neutralizing the attack until a patch is made available and installed.
The vendors have acknowledged the vulnerabilities and are busy working on patches and various sources have suggested schemes to protect users. To address the Excel zero-day vulnerability, users are required to make changes to the Windows Registry, a task usually left to system administrators in a corporate environment, and beyond the scope of most home users. Likewise, the Adobe workaround requires users to disable JavaScript in Reader and Acrobat.
“We are pleased that once again, AppGuard has proven itself against zero-day malware attacks,” stated Mike Fumai, CEO of Blue Ridge Networks. “These attacks can cost corporations millions of dollars in lost productivity, not to mention the impact on a company’s reputation should a vulnerability expose proprietary personnel, corporate or business partner data. Home users are at risk because they can’t trust documents sent to them by friends and co-workers.”
AppGuard is designed for consumers and enterprises to neutralize malware attacks against the applications most targeted by hackers, including Web browsers, Microsoft Office Applications, and Media Players. Additional applications are easily added to the guarded list by either System Administrators or end-users.
Blue Ridge/Secure AppGuard is priced at $ 24.95 per user. A free, 30-day trial is also available.
