University of Toronto Latest School To Join Windward Code Wars

The University of Toronto is the most recent university to announce its participation in the 2013 International Collegiate Programming Championship. Sponsored by reporting and document generation software giant Windward, the “Code Wars” hackathon is a challenge that tests the programming knowledge, innovative thinking and teamwork of computer science college students.

“Code Wars is a fun competition between top schools over programming instead of sports,” said Dave Thielen, Windward’s founder and CTO. “It reinforces a joy of learning purely for the sake of knowledge and it’s exciting for the students to watch their entries beat up on the other teams’ entries.”

The University of Toronto joins teams from The College of William and Mary, Colorado School of Mines, Columbia University, Michigan Tech, Purdue University West Lafayette , and University of Pennsylvania that have already announced their participation in the January 26, 2013 contest.

Students race against the clock and one another to analyze a problem, write a solution, and test and debug it. After the 8-hour programming deadline, teams go head to head.

In the 2012 hackathon, the University of WisconsinEau Claire took top honors. Team Grande Letra O dueled through a hard-fought semifinal and 10 final rounds to capture the Windward Code Wars Trophy, defeating its closest rival by a final score of 502-468.
