Web Site Design Basics

(PRWEB) April 30, 2005

If a page doesn’t load in 8 seconds you lose 1/3 of your visitors. Limit your text and limit the length of your lines. Use around 65 characters per line. Long lines are hard to follow. Dashes and bullets increase readability while bold or italics can make key points stand out.

Black text on white background works well on Web sites. On some screens the black and white contrast is far too strong and tires the eyes so then the background should be off-white. If your text is white, for example, make your background image dark. Text on a background with patterns is difficult to read, the text color may blend in, making part of the text impossible to see and read. If an image must be used as background it should not disrupt reading. Make sure the text color contrasts so it is easily read.

San serif fonts work best, and are created to be very readable at small sizes and on most screens. Use different sizes and colors for headings, subheadings and paragraphs and give plenty of space in between, to avoid monotony. Use as few stop words as possible [e.g. and, to, when, etc]. A Web page should have a primary heading describing very briefly what the page is about. It should also have secondary headings for each important section. Use HTML tables to divide a long page into two or more columns.

Some Web sites don’t use up all of the available space. Building ‘liquid’ designs fixes this problem by making the layout fit the screen. They expand or shrink to the available, no matter what browser window size or resolution the user might be using. To do this, specify the width in percentages [e.g. 100%] – the copy inside the table will expand along with it.

Music, images, flash, splash, JavaScript will increase download time. Flash files are especially hard on bandwidth consumption. 25% of visitors leave instead of clicking on the splash page and entering the site.

Limit yourself to no more than 5 or 6 images per page, keep image files 12K or smaller in size, and convert to .gif format. Reduce the amount of colors in the image. Compare file sizes between the tweaked image and the original, in NetMechanic’s free Gif Optimizer. Image editors, such as PhotoShop, have an option to save an image for the Web.

Frames take up a lot screen space, are distracting and Search Engine robots do not read pages with frames! All they see are the outlines of the frames, the ‘frameset’. They don’t see any links, so assume it is a dead page.

Text color should contrast well with the background. Test your site in a variety of browsers for free at http://www.anybrowser.com/ScreenSizeTest.html.

It is common for something to cause the site to disappear, so make a copy and keep it current.

LogiSphere Webcam Server for Windows

(PRWEB) May 7, 2005

New tilt/pan software for the Logitech Sphere camera.

Logitech includes software to track faces in front of the camera. Unfortunately there is no software included to deliver pictures to the web nor tilt/pan control. For many owners this is a huge disappointment.

Now there is a solution:

With LogiSphere, you can control the camera from any browser and move the camera.

Unlike other software, this application has a very small footprint and does not use much of the computers resources.

It supports any windows compatible video device, but tilt/pan operation is supported for the Logitech Sphere only.

Even without a camera the software makes sense:

the included web server will deliver web pages and other files.

Installation is simple. Examples provide three different views:

single picture, no motion control

live video with tilt/pan control using JavaScript

live video with tilt/pan control using a Java Applet

Fresh Color Combos Tagged as DesignÂ’s Next Big Thing

(PRWEB) May 9, 2005

About.com recently launched in their website a wide variety of color combos involving process colors, spot colors and web colors that can be used in designing a website, an art project, a promotional material, printing needs and other design inclined job. Said color combos use playful, earthy, bright, inspirational, attractive and easy on the eyes colors to ensure dynamism.

Designers are constantly comparing their works to other designer’s work in order to know what design works. According to Judy Litt, a distinguished designer, color is definitely a large part of what makes designs work, whether it’s black and white, process color, or the Web safety palette.

Designers use varying kinds of colors to fit to their intended design. Popular set of colors are process colors, Process colors, also known as 4-color, use varying quantities of CMYK colors, short for cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Spot color otherwise known as pantone, uses the exact color that the designer intended. The most common among spot color standards is the Pantone Matching System (PMS). In this kind of color standard, designers often have with them a set of swatch books to reflect their samples and codes. Web colors, on the other hand, are the creation of colors for HTML pages by mixing different quantities of Red, Green and Blue (RGB) light. Instead of ink pigments they utilize lights. These colors are web safe or colors that cannot be dithered when a restricted color palette is in use. These color combinations are picked using a 3-in-1 JavaScript color picker to compose and compare the colors; and a 4096 color picker which has a wide variety of hex values when using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).

CMYK and spot color have a lot of interesting possibilities between them. They can be combined or mixed to create duotones, tritones and quadtones. Succeeding mixtures can also be used to create new colors and effects. A great percentage of designers are still clamoring for more colors. The answer to their clamor is the arrival of fresh color combos by About. These powerful combos are expected to boost every designer’s valued design.

Canoo Releases UltraLightClient 6.0

Basel, Switzerland (PRWEB) May 9, 2005

Canoo Engineering AG (http://www.canoo.com/) announces the official release of UltraLightClient 6.0 (http://www.canoo.com/ulc/). The release includes out-of-the-box functionality to pause and resume application sessions in Rich Internet Applications. Used by enterprises to rapidly build and deploy rich, responsive user interfaces for enterprise web applications, the Canoo library now offers near-equivalence to Swing. Companies can reuse available Swing know-how and be productive almost immediately. Newly added Swing features include a new Border API, action support for listeners and full support of layouts.

The Java Solution for Enterprise Web Applications

UltraLightClient is a lean library that delegates tasks to the standard J2EE/J2SE infrastructure whenever possible. It uses Swing on the client, standard communication protocols set by the J2EE container, and standard lifecycle management on the server. In contrast to other more proprietary platforms, UltraLightClient is an add-on library for Swing and J2EE and can be easily integrated into existing web platforms. The principal design of UltraLightClient is based on the half-object and protocol pattern. Applied to Swing, this pattern is used to offer the Swing API in a server-side programming model, providing rich user interfaces in a web architecture. UltraLightClient-based applications can be deployed in any J2EE container, as a portlet, or even stand-alone without changing the code. On the client, a standard JRE from 1.3.1 upwards is all that is required. See Key Differentiators (http://www.canoo.com/ulc/home/keydifferentiators.html) to find out how the Canoo solution compares with other technologies.

Pause and Resume Application Sessions

UltraLightClient 6.0 provides functionality to pause and resume a user session including its editing state, e.g. current windows opened, selections, and scroll positions. This means that when the application is paused on the client, the client-side engine is terminated, while the server-side session remains live. Once a client requests the server to resume a session, it can be downloaded to the client again, showing the user interface in the same state as before. Other brand-new features include action support for components with action listeners, a new Border API, and full support of Swing layouts. In addition, the extension API now supports Swing factory methods. Using this enhancement, developers can extend existing UltraLightClient classes more easily.

Minimal Learning Curve for Swing Developers

Developers familiar with Swing are productive with UltraLightClient within a very short time. The new release closely follows the Swing API. In many cases, code migration from Swing to UltraLightClient simply entails replacing the corresponding class and method names. With UltraLightClient, Swing developers have a homogeneous environment for developing web applications with complex GUIs. There is no need to juggle between JSP, JavaScript, and HTML to achieve interactive client/server applications.

Software Requirements

UltraLightClient requires JRE 1.3.1 or higher.

Pricing

A developer license of UltraLightClient costs US$ 1499 and includes free runtime distribution on any number of servers. A free evaluation license is available for 30 days.

Code Community for UltraLightClient Developers

The UltraLightClient Code Community (http://ulc-community.canoo.com/) provides a platform for developers to share useful extensions, add-ons and integration snippets. All code contributions are available for free.

Canoo Releases UltraLightClient 6.0

Monday, 2 September 2013

(PRWEB) May 11, 2005
