There are several approaches publishers take in an effort to maximize their ad revenue.
Steve Slavutskiy has tried most of these and finally he was able to identify what works and what doesnt.
Fake Site Frenzy. Who would have ever thought that wed need a term to describe a website that is not really a website? This particular fad works like this: A publisher acquires as many domain names as possible in some cases over 20,000 and parks them all with aggregators. These sites in essence are ad-happy pages full of advertising links and absolutely no content. Owners of these sites depend on pure traffic (people typing in the domain name into address bar) if the user clicks on anything once on one of these sites publisher gets paid.
Verdict: Overall model is not bad but in my opinion its like running a towing company. You never have a happy customer and no one really likes dealing with you. So if you are interested in building a sustainable business I would recommend staying away from this approach.
Content for Sale content for sale. After Ive decided that Fake Site approach was not for me, Steve Slavutskiy reports, Ive started searching for a way to get a lot of sites up quickly after all its a numbers game the more sites you have the better off you are. So Ive purchased AdSense Business on eBay. A collection of 155 sites which cover a wide range of topics. Ive set these sites up on my server. Linked my AdSense account to them all and I was ready to receive an enormous amount of cash. After all I have 155 sites. How could I fail?
Verdict: This particular approach in my opinion is even worse than Fake Sites. With fake sites at least you get a reaction for the user its not always a favorable one but its a reaction. With these sites there is an absolute lack of any interest. Rightly so, these so called content heavy sites are redundant articles about nothing. There are thousands of identical ones floating around the net. They offer no value whatsoever just a whole lot of blah blah about blah blah.
Recipe for Success. Ive made a discovery, a formula which I can now use to build my business. My job is first to pick a topic a problem to solve rather. For example my latest site diamondsmadeeasy.com an informational site that offers basic facts about diamonds and how to pick one. The site is a smashing success for me and it got me thinking what was so special about this site. Here is what Ive come up with:
The site genuinely offers value to the visitor. It gives them information they are seeking. However after the information is received on my site the visitor still has to purchase the diamond. You see information in that particular contest is not the final product visitor is after, therefore the click through ratio on diamondsmadeeasy.com site is on the average 5.12%. To better illustrate my point lets look at another one of my sites jsmadeeasy.com the site offers countless amount of Java Scripts to visitors free of charge. In this particular case the click through ratio is 0.67% quite the difference from diamondsmadeeasy.com site. Now if you think about the type of the visitor that comes to jsmadeeasy.com site youd realize that a visitor is after the script and nothing else. You see the visitor that comes to jsmadeeasy.com gets what he wants as a final product and is not likely to click on any of my banners.
So in summary strive to build sites that provide support to the visitor but do not position your site to be the final product visitor is seeking. Stay away from unoriginal content as you will only drive your visitors away.
