Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) November 21, 2012
Well into the 21st century, parents expect to be able to buy safe toys for their children with confidence they will not end up in an emergency room. Unfortunately, due to inadequate government testing and selfish interests of toy manufacturers, some toys on store shelves this holiday season can poison, suffocate, strangle and otherwise kill or hurt a child.**
Many parents rely on the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) to keep dangerous toys off the market, but more than 99 percent of toys in stores have not been tested by the government.* Some toys may kill dozens of children** and send more than 150,000 to the emergency room, just as it happens every other year.***
During the holidays, toy safety is not at the forefront of everyones mind, said attorney Larry Coben, shareholder of the Anapol Schwartz law firm. Sadly, toy companies and the government often fail to give sufficient warning of a toys potentially deadly dangers until a child dies or gets seriously hurt.
More than 30 years after lead was banned as a house paint ingredient,**** the highly toxic element is still found on some plastic toys to make them more flexible.***** Some manufacturers make toys with more than double the recommended limit by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Exposure to this poisonous element can cause brain damage, permanent disorders and deficits in childrens learning skills, reaction time and coordination.*****
In addition to poison, some toys can lead to strangulation, permanent hearing loss and suffocation. The lack of government oversight and irresponsible business practices of toy manufacturers makes it imperative for parents to evaluate the safety of every toy for themselves to keep kids safe.*****
