Dr. Azizzadeh appeared on the OWN Network Where Are They Now? program alongside Mary Jo recently, where her triumphs in overcoming facial paralysis after sustaining a gunshot wound to the face were documented. Today, Mary Jo has rebuilt her life and educates others as a published author and motivational speaker.
Together, Dr. Azizzadeh and Mary Jo, through the Facial Paralysis and Bells Palsy Foundation, have created a support group for persons with facial paralysis to come together, share their stories, and encourage each other.
At the most recent support group meeting, opera singer Heidi Moss shared her story of dealing with Bells palsy, and later treated attendees to an awe-inspiring opera performance. It was an incredible honor to have both Heidi and Mary Jo attend a support group meeting of the foundation. Hearing both women speak about all that theyve overcome is truly inspiring, said Dr. Azizzadeh. Heidi even performed songs for us that left everyone captivated by her amazing voice.
Heidi Moss was diagnosed in 2007 with Bells palsy, which is a form of facial paralysis that does not have a known origin and occurs without warning. The condition stems from the inflammation of the facial nerve, which in turn blocks the necessary signals needed for facial movement. Though the disorder clears up naturally in 90% of patients, some cases require surgical procedures and can be permanent.
In Heidis case, the disorder has yet to go away. What began for Heidi as a troubling and difficult experience, she has turned into an opportunity to inform and educate others through the newly created opera titled About Face: An Opera Experience, which she will take part in next month in northern California.
