When presidential politics come to mind, the last thing anyone tends to think about these days is flexibility. But in designing the user interface for Unpartial.com, that was a strict requirement for Stremor Corp. Launched in concert with the Republican National Convention, Unpartial.com is a technology showcase for Liquid Helium, Stremor Corps new language heuristics engine that in this usage, scores the credibility of political news. And as much as its a showcase for the back-end, Unpartial.com also shows off the companys incredible talent for responsive design. So much, that Forbes recently billed the site as a well designed Techmeme for politics.
Responsive design is the industry term for an increasingly popular combination of techniques; combining HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, that dynamically refines the presentation layer of a website depending on the screen size of the users device. When used effectively, the result is a full featured web application that provides an exceptional full-screen browsing experience for desktop users, yet fluidly scales down to something that feels like an app for mobile users.
The genius behind Unpartial.coms responsive design and arguably one of the most complex websites ever to receive the responsive approach, is Greg Rewis, former Chief Evangelist for Adobe. Ive been preaching responsive design and techniques for years, and one of the main reasons I joined Stremor is because the CEO said, Prove it. Rewis also commented that the priority of the design had to showcase the Liquid Helium back end. We dont want to be political news experts, he said. We want to be technology experts, so the design had to be both interesting and cool, but not get in the way of showing off the tech. A tough challenge made tougher by the fact that we decided to create Unpartial.com only a few weeks ago!
Seven weeks to be exact, says Stremors CEO, Bill Irvine. When our CTO, Brandon Wirtz, said we should make something to show off Liquid Helium, we all came to the immediate conclusion political news was the best content to use. Then we realized the Republican National Convention was only six weeks away. I like seeing my developers panic, its fun.
Unpartial.com has received similar rave reviews from users and press during its first week of operation. This week, it continues to rank the credibility of political news as the Democratic National Convention ramps up with a new round of news, opinion, and spin.
Stremor Corp is an Internet technology startup, focused on building the next generation of intelligent platforms for content creation, discovery, and consumption, utilizing their powerful language heuristics engine, Liquid Helium. Located in Scottsdale, Arizona, they currently staff ten full time employees and are well-funded. Utilizing “lean” methodologies, Stremor Corp has an ambitious plan for sustainable growth through a series of future product releases.
