CaRP RSS Parser Updated With New Features, Improved Installer

(PRWEB) February 26, 2005

The newly released version 3.5.5 of CaRP, Gecko Tribe’s popular tool for displaying RSS feeds on websites, adds features to give webmasters greater control over the processing and appearance of the newsfeeds. One common problem that has been addressed is newsfeeds published with inaccurate time zone information. A new feature allows the webmaster to add or subtract a specified number of minutes to all the time stamps in the feed to correct these errors. This is especially important for displaying items in the proper order when aggregating multiple feeds, some of which have accurate time stamps, and some of which don’t.

This version also gives users the option to disable CaRP’s attempts to fix invalid character entity references. While this feature is necessary with poorly formed RSS feeds, it can result in incorrect display of well formed feeds under some circumstances. Other changes include ensuring that ampersands are entity encoded when they appear in link URLs, the ability to display images from RSS 1.X feeds where the image element is not a child of the channel element, and other miscellaneous improvements.

Finally, the setup assistant has been updated to fully automate the installation process for most users by using either FTP or Telnet to configure security settings, rather than being limited to Telnet alone. For those users whose servers do not support either the FTP or Telnet method of configuring security settings, the instructions for how to do it manually have also been improved.

RSS and Atom newsfeeds are an increasingly popular tool for displaying up-to-date content on a website. They are often used to import news, commentary, and other information from other websites. They are also useful as a standard method for displaying information from one part of one’s own website in other places on the site.

Recently, search engine optimization specialists have begun using newsfeeds to boost search engine rankings by ensuring that a webpage always contains fresh content, pertinent to the subject of the page. Many sites offering newsfeeds publish them as JavaScripts, which are not indexed by search engines, and are thus unsuitable for this purpose. CaRP solves this problem by inserting the newsfeed content directly into the HTML code of a webpage, where it is visible to search engines. CaRP runs on PHP-enabled websites.
