During April 2012, more than 38,000 jobs were seen advertised online in the engineering services sector, according to WANTED Analytics (http://www.wantedanalytics.com), the leading source of real-time business intelligence for the talent marketplace. Hiring by these organizations increased 17% compared to April 2011 and more than 57% compared to April 2010.
Engineering and technology occupations saw the highest number of online job ads in the engineering services sector during April 2012. Some of the most commonly advertised positions were Civil Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Industrial Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, and Network and Computer Systems Administrators. Civil Engineers were not only the most commonly advertised occupation in April, but also saw the greatest year-over-year increase in demand. Hiring for Civil Engineers in engineering services grew 41% when compared to April 2011.
Since engineering and technology jobs are most in-demand, employers commonly require potential candidates to have knowledge or experience with several computer or engineering related tools and technologies, including:
1. Project management
2. Autodesk AutoCAD
3. Bentley Microstation
4. Structured query language (SQL)
5. Microsoft SQL Server (MS SQL)
6. JavaScript
7. Microsoft .NET Framework (.NET)
8. Extensible markup language (XML)
9. Information assurance
10. Hypertext markup language (HTML)
The five metropolitan areas with the highest volume of online job ads within engineering services companies during April were Washington (DC), Houston, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Washington, DC saw the greatest volume of online job ads by engineering services companies, up 54% compared to the same time period in 2011. However, employers in San Francisco experienced the highest year-over-year growth in demand at more than 70% during April.
Nationwide, companies are likely to find engineering jobs hard-to-recruit, particularly when filling highly demanded engineering and IT jobs. According to the Hiring Scale, employers in Washington, DC are currently experiencing some of the heaviest competition to attract talent and may experience a longer time-to-fill than many other areas across the United States. In fact, the average posting period in Washington, DC is about 6.5 weeks. The Hiring Scale also shows that the best places to recruit engineering services professionals are currently Miami (FL), Fort Collins (CO), and Kennewick (WA). These areas are likely to fill job openings faster than the rest of the United States. Online job ads in these areas are posted for an average of about 5.8 weeks.
